Camaro fans all around, we have great news for you! At the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park's drag strip, the 2016 Camaro SS posted an incredible 1/4-mile time for a stock model - 12.21 seconds. That's faster than the best 1/4-mile time managed by the S550-gen Mustang GT.
Brandan Gillogly of Hot Rod magazine posted the 12.21-second result on his Instagram page, without giving a lot of details about the feat. By comparison, the very fastest recorded run for the Mustang GT in 6-speed automatic guise is 12.5 seconds at 112 miles per hour (180.2 km/h).
So the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS auto is a tad quicker than the 2016 Ford Mustang GT auto, but here's another neat thing about it - Chevy's estimated 1/4-mile runs for the auto and manual are 12.3 and 12.5 seconds, respectively. The 8L90 Hydra-Matic automatic proved that it's faster than the estimate, but the 6-speed manual isn’t too shabby either. Hot Rod managed to post a 12.40-second run with the 1SS 6-speed manual.
That's a whole tenth under the manufacturer's estimated 1/4-mile time. Brandan Gillogly's Instagram post is a testament to the mighty 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft (619 Nm) of torque developed by the GM LT1 V8.
How low can the 2016 Camaro SS go from here, considering that these are the first publicly staged runs for the all-new Camaro? Will someone post a sub-12s run with a standard model? The sky's the limit as far as we're concerned. And hot damn, the black rally stripes look really good on the silver-painted Camaro.
